‘Cellist at Jazz Connection: Talk and recital Wednesday, August 11
Andrea Case, a classical cellist from Calgary, spent three months in New York City studying jazz, improvised music, and alternate uses of the cello. Come and hear her speak about how expanding her ear has expanded her outlook on what an instrument can do outside of conventional boundaries! You will hear wonderful examples of wild, weird and wonderful styles of playing which use the cello in many different genres. Andrea will share her newly acquired perspectives on how exploring new techniques can improve your playing and improvisation skills.Presentation is at noon on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, during Jazz Connection at Bishop Carroll High School. It is free and open to the public.
JAZZ CONNECTION creates an environment of learning, listening and creating jazz music in an entertaining and supportive setting. It is open to all instrumentalists aged 13 through adult who are interested in exploring improvisation, musical creativity and jazz styles through involvement in both combos and big-bands. (Pianists should have a minimum of a grade six Royal Conservatory of Music or Conservatory Canada or equivalent playing ability. Other instrumentalists would benefit from having two or more years of playing experience.)

Jazz Connection is pleased to announce its affiliation with the Calgary Arts Summer School Association! Jazz Connection started several years ago as the brainchild of Dr. Jeremy Brown, Derek Stoll, Pat Belliveau and John deWaal – all of whom play in the jazz ensemble "Verismo". Participants in Jazz Connection explore the creative side of music through involvement in various types of jazz combos. Participants explore improvisation, composition, stylistic elements and ensemble playing. Sectional as well as combo classes are provided, and lectures on various elements of music, including jazz theory and the 'business' side of music are included. The program is open to players of all instruments.
The instructors are all accomplished jazz musicians, all of whom have performed, toured and recorded extensively, and enjoy sharing their love of this genre through teaching! The music being performed is drawn from the 'jazz standards', and also from original music composed by participants and faculty of Jazz Connection.
